The Arkansas Perinatal Outcomes Workgroup through Education and Research (POWER) meeting was held in April 2019 at the Rockefeller Institute atop Petit Jean Mountain. The event, open to all facilities in Arkansas that provide obstetric services, included nursing and other health care leaders who met for a day of networking, education, and interactive skill stations aimed at improving perinatal mortality and morbidity outcomes.

Dr Cheryl Washington opened the workshop by relating current statistics on Arkansas’ maternal mortality and how it compares to the rest of the United States. Dr William Greenfield discussed the road to establishing a Maternal Mortality Review Commission and what that would mean for Arkansas, including being able to participate in many national research databases. The patient safety bundle of Reduction of Racial/ Ethnic Disparities in healthcare was the subject of additional speakers and a discussion panel.

The second half of the day was filled with representatives from several hospitals who have been on a journey of implementation of patient safety bundles, and how each facility overcame barriers to implementation. There were also interactive skill stations covering topics related to maternal mortality and appropriate emergent obstetric treatments.
